S/Africa launches circular project to combat food plastic pollution

South Africa has launched the Plastic Reboot Project: Circular Solutions for Plastic Pollution in Pretoria, a major initiative aimed at addressing plastic waste in the food and beverage sector.

The multi-year program seeks to transform how plastic is designed, used, and managed across the entire packaging value chain.

According to officials, the project’s ultimate goal is to create a systemic shift that reduces plastic pollution while steering South Africa toward a circular economy that benefits both people and the environment.

The project will concentrate on upstream and midstream areas of the plastics lifecycle.

Upstream interventions include eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastics, phasing out hazardous additives, promoting reuse and refill models, and encouraging the use of recycled plastics as alternatives to virgin materials.

Midstream strategies will emphasize innovation to extend product lifespans, develop reusable and recyclable packaging, and promote systems such as repair, refill, and resell that minimize waste.

The program also seeks to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption by households and commercial users, especially where short-lived plastic products dominate.

While downstream activities such as collection, segregation, or recycling will not be directly funded, project leaders highlight that the upstream and midstream measures will complement and strengthen existing waste management initiatives.

The Plastic Reboot Project is supported by the Global Environment Facility with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation as the lead international implementation partner.

Within South Africa, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment will serve as the national focal point, while WWF South Africa will execute the project in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and GreenCape.

The initiative is expected to reduce environmental harm, generate sustainable business opportunities, and foster a fairer and more resource-efficient economy.
