Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared the state’s preparedness to address any impending flood challenges.
In a statement posted on X platform on Monday, Fubara announced that the Rivers state government has established an intergovernmental flood management committee to proactively tackle potential flooding issues.
“We have set up an intergovernmental flood management committee to respond proactively to the looming flooding that may affect the lowlands and flood plains of our State as predicted by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),” he stated.
With the launch of a flood mitigation roadmap, Fubara assured residents that the state is on high alert to respond to any impending flood challenges and provide safety and relief to those at risk.
Fubara also appealed to corporate entities, philanthropic individuals, and non-governmental organizations to be prepared to offer material support to the intergovernmental flood management committee.
He emphasized that their support would greatly aid in the committee’s mission to assist vulnerable individuals.
Additionally, Fubara highlighted the efforts made during his administration’s first 100 days to improve the well-being of Rivers residents in the face of economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies, unemployment, and rising inflation.
He mentioned the palliative effect of the free bus transport scheme initiated in July to alleviate the high cost of living for ordinary citizens.
Furthermore, the governor pledged to maintain these mitigating measures, including ongoing food distribution to the vulnerable population, for an extended period.
