REAN Seeks Reversal of Ban on Solar Energy Products Import

The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has urged the federal government to rescind its decision to ban solar energy products imports, emphasizing the potential negative impact on the renewable energy sector.

In a statement issued on April 7, 2025, REAN argued that while the government aims to promote local manufacturing and enhance energy security, such measures should not come at the expense of industry growth.

REAN highlighted that solar energy plays a crucial role for millions of Nigerians lacking reliable access to the national grid. “Solar solutions are essential for powering homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses,” the group noted, pointing out that the sector has attracted significant investment and innovation.

The association warned that an import ban, without prior enhancement of local production capabilities, could derail progress in the sector.

It stressed that local manufacturers face numerous challenges, including high production costs, limited access to raw materials, and supply chain inefficiencies.

According to REAN, prematurely restricting imports could lead to increased prices for solar products, making them less accessible to everyday Nigerians.

It could also threaten businesses reliant on imported components, potentially resulting in job losses and decreased investment in the sector.

REAN proposed a more measured approach, advocating for a phased strategy that encourages local manufacturing while allowing essential imports.

They suggested providing incentives such as tax breaks and infrastructure support for local producers, as well as fostering partnerships between Nigerian firms and international companies to facilitate technology transfer.

“Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy requires a comprehensive strategy rather than a single policy decision,” REAN stated.

“The government should act as a facilitator, promoting a competitive industry that supports local businesses without cutting off vital import channels.”

The association reiterated its commitment to working with policymakers to develop solutions that align national interests with the realities of the renewable energy sector.

REAN called on the government to prioritize the creation of a sustainable solar industry that effectively meets the needs of the Nigerian people.
