This is real danger on our hands.
This is a major drainage in Okota district, Lagos State. Here the drainage linking some streets empties into a nearby large river.
At this estuary type of link to the river, a mass of floating seaweed blocks the mouth of the estuary and forms this huge accumulation of thousands of discarded plastic bottles.
Under normal weather conditions, these non-biodegradable substances constitute serious hazard to a clean environment, as they also contaminate the earth.
It takes a full century for a plastic substance to decay and with the huge tonnage Nigeria turns out daily and less than 2% recycled, we face an imminent danger to the safety of our environment.
