Opportunity bank holds charity run for reforestation

Opportunity Bank Uganda held its annual charity run to celebrate its 30th anniversary and reinforce its commitment to environmental stewardship.

The event, themed “Planting Hope, Growing Change, Greening the Future,” took place on Sunday at the bank’s Kamwokya headquarters and included 5km and 10km races. The run was organized to raise awareness about climate change and support national reforestation initiatives.

The event highlights the bank’s partnership with the Lukango Tree Conservancy (LuTreeCo) on a national school greening program. Since May 2024, the initiative has planted over 3,000 indigenous trees in 66 schools across Uganda’s four regions.

More than 3,000 students are actively involved in the program, which focuses on environmental education and enhancing climate resilience.

According to Opportunity Bank CEO Owen Amanya, the effort is crucial given Uganda’s declining forest cover, which has dropped from 24% in 1990 to 9.5% today.

Amanya stated that the trees being planted are “seeds of hope and commitments to lasting change,” aimed at fostering a new generation of environmental stewards.

The proceeds from the charity run will be used to fund and expand the school greening program and other related community conservation projects.

The bank thanked all participants and partners for their collective effort toward a more sustainable future for Uganda.
