In a recent development, the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has disclosed the successful containment of an offshore oil spill originating from TotalEnergies’ Egina Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.
The spill, reported on November 15, resulted in the loss of approximately 3,000 barrels of crude oil from the facility located 130 kilometers off the Atlantic coastline from Port Harcourt in Rivers State.
Mr. Idris Musa, the Director-General of NOSDRA, commended the prompt and collaborative efforts of NOSDRA and TotalEnergies in effectively containing the spill and preventing its reach to the coastline.
The swift response, guided by a comprehensive spills contingency plan, involved dedicated personnel and an array of response resources.
This proactive approach resulted in a limited environmental impact, showcasing the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts.
Musa highlighted the deployment of high-level personnel and the activation of the National Oil Spills Contingency Plan as critical components of the swift and effective response.
He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various oil industry stakeholders, including the use of aircraft and vessels for cleanup, underscoring their commitment to containing the oil leakage from the Egina facility.
The utilization of response aircraft and vessels, coupled with the application of dispersants, played a pivotal role in minimizing the spill’s impact on the shoreline.
Musa emphasized the prompt and comprehensive response by TotalEnergies, facilitating the identification and cessation of the oil leak, thus preventing further environmental damage.
Ongoing environmental surveillance and response activities, including aerial surveillance and shoreline monitoring, continue to be integral to the management of the spill.
NOSDRA reaffirmed its commitment to overseeing the response and monitoring activities, ensuring continued vigilance in addressing the incident.
The collaborative efforts and swift coordination between NOSDRA, TotalEnergies, and industry stakeholders have proven instrumental in containing the spill and mitigating its environmental impact.
As response and monitoring activities persist, NOSDRA remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding the environment and achieving a comprehensive resolution to the offshore oil spill incident.
