The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have reiterated their commitments to reducing gas flaring in Nigeria.

This was emphasized at the National Extractives Dialogue 2024 held in Abuja on Friday, themed “Gas Flare Reduction: A Catalyst for Accelerating Nigeria’s PathNet-Zero Emissions and Sustainable Development.”

Director-General of NOSDRA, Chukwuemeka Woke, highlighted the agency’s mission to address gas flaring and methane emissions.

He noted that reducing gas flaring is essential for environmental protection and aligns with Nigeria’s national development and global commitments.

Dr. Woke expressed concern over the negative impacts of gas flaring on Nigeria’s natural resources.

He explained that addressing gas flaring could lead to improved energy efficiency, economic diversification, and community resilience, thereby boosting economic growth and job creation in line with President Bola Tinubu’s 8-point Agenda

Dr. Orji Orji, Executive Secretary of NEITI, represented by Dr. Dieter Bassi, Director of Policy Planning and Strategy, stated that the dialogue provided a constructive platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for reducing gas flaring, minimizing carbon footprints, and promoting sustainable development.
