Nigeria’s NNPC Ltd. has embarked on a strategic partnership with Deloitte and the US Department of State to mitigate methane emissions and achieve net-zero carbon emissions from its upstream activities.
A pivotal three-day workshop, held on February 5, 2024, at the PTDF Tower in Abuja, marked the inception of the project.
This workshop was conducted under the purview of the US Department of State’s Technical Assistance on Oil & Gas Sector Global Methane Abatement and Decarbonization Workshop.
The workshop unanimously designated OML 34 in the Western Niger Delta, encompassing Utorogu and Ughelli Fields, as the focal point for the project.
Participants included NNPC Ltd.’s subsidiaries, such as the Exploration & Production and New Energy departments, alongside key stakeholders from Gas Infrastructure, Health, Safety, and Environment sectors, as well as representatives from Federal Government agencies like the National Council on Climate Change.
Key objectives discussed during the workshop included delineating the project’s scope, establishing a baseline for methane and carbon emissions at the chosen operation sites, and collating essential data pertinent to these sites.
Additionally, participants focused on facilitating Deloitte consultants’ understanding of NNPC Ltd.’s objectives and operational methodologies.
This collaborative initiative underscores NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector.
Through strategic partnerships and concerted efforts, the project aims to significantly reduce methane emissions and advance the transition towards sustainable energy practices in Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas industry.
