By Abbas Nazil

Few environmental advocates in Africa have shaped the discourse on ecological justice, climate accountability and community rights as profoundly as Rev. Dr. Nnimmo Bassey.

As director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Dr. Bassey has dedicated decades to defending vulnerable communities affected by environmental degradation, particularly in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, while extending his advocacy across the African continent and the Global South.

Widely regarded as one of the continent’s foremost environmental thinkers, he has consistently challenged policies and practices that threaten ecosystems, livelihoods and public health.

His campaigns have focused on oil pollution, extractive industries, climate injustice, biodiversity conservation and food sovereignty, earning him recognition as a fearless defender of both people and nature.

Beyond his work on ecological justice, Dr. Bassey has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most influential voices against genetically modified organisms (GMOs), advocating for sustainable agricultural systems that protect indigenous seeds, farmers’ rights and food security.

His influence extends globally through his membership of the steering committees of Oilwatch International and the Global Alliance for Rights of Nature.

Dr. Bassey’s contributions have attracted international acclaim.

He served as Chair of Friends of the Earth International from 2008 to 2012, helping to strengthen global environmental solidarity and grassroots activism.

In 2009, Time Magazine named him a Hero of the Environment.

A year later, he became co-recipient of the prestigious Right Livelihood Award, often referred to as the Alternative Nobel Prize, in recognition of his commitment to environmental and human rights advocacy.

His dedication has continued to earn honours across the world.

He received the Rafto Human Rights Award in 2012 and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2014.

Academic institutions have also celebrated his impact.

The University of York in the United Kingdom awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2019, while York University in Canada honoured him with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2023.

In 2024, he received the prestigious Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan, further cementing his status as a global environmental leader.

An accomplished architect, poet and author, Dr. Bassey is a Fellow of both the Nigerian Institute of Architects and the Association of Nigerian Authors.

His writings have inspired generations of activists, scholars and policymakers committed to environmental sustainability and social justice.

Fondly called “The Living Ancestor” by environmental activists, he remains a symbol of resilience, integrity and unwavering commitment to protecting the earth.

NatureNews Africa comments that Rev. Dr. Nnimmo Bassey represents the conscience of environmental advocacy in Nigeria and beyond.

His relentless defence of frontline communities, courageous resistance against ecological exploitation and sustained push for environmental justice have elevated public awareness of the interconnectedness of human wellbeing and nature.

Through activism, scholarship and moral leadership, he has inspired a generation of environmental defenders and continues to demonstrate that protecting the environment is inseparable from protecting humanity itself.
