The Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) and the Kano State Water Board (KSWB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving the state’s water governance system and ensuring sustainable service delivery.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NIWRMC Executive Director, Dr. Abdulmumini Aminu-Zaria, said the partnership between the federal and state governments would enhance coordinated management of water abstraction, groundwater development, pollution control and overall service delivery.

He noted that the collaboration aligns with the national drive for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and will help develop a reliable reporting system and strategies to safeguard water quantity and quality for future generations.

Aminu-Zaria added that NIWRMC is undergoing institutional reforms to strengthen governance and stakeholder engagement in the water sector.

He said the MoU with KSWB reflects a shared commitment to improving water allocation efficiency, ensuring compliance with national water regulations, promoting transparency in water-use licensing, and harmonising regulatory roles.

The agreement, the executive director said, will also enhance data sharing and reinforce monitoring and enforcement across Kano State’s water sector.

He commended the Kano State Water Board for embracing regulatory reforms and expressed optimism that the partnership would set a benchmark for other states.

Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Haruna Doguwa, stated that the government prioritises access to potable water and views the MoU as a tool to better manage and maximise the state’s water resources for residents and businesses.
