Melsmore Marine Nigeria Limited, selected as technical partners to oversee the operational aspects of the modular floating dock belonging to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has received the green light from the agency to initiate the relocation of the facility.

The modular floating dock, formerly situated at the Naval Dockyard in Victoria Island, Lagos, is set to be moved to the Dolphine Jetty waterfront at the NPA Dockyard in Apapa, marking a significant step towards the commencement of its operational activities.

In a recent statement issued by the Managing Director of Melsmore, Danny Fuchs, it was disclosed that the company’s pivotal responsibility lies in expertly relocating the modular floating dock from its current location to the designated waterfront at the Dolphine Jetty in Apapa.

Fuchs elucidated, “The previously occupied area at the Dolphine Jetty, which was held by the Sea Lion, has now been vacated, creating the necessary space for our upcoming operation. A collaborative understanding with NIMASA has been established to ensure the seamless execution of this endeavor.”

Integral to the mooring system of the modular floating dock are two robust steel piles, each measuring 36 meters in length, 2 meters in diameter, and weighing approximately 48 tonnes.

These substantial piles necessitate careful installation, involving driving them about 20 meters into the seabed. Leveraging their expertise, Melsmore Marine Nigeria is prepared to orchestrate this complex operation.

Furthermore, plans are underway to engage the assistance of Damen Shipyard, the manufacturers of the modular floating dock, to ensure a collaborative approach in achieving the relocation project.

Fuchs emphasized, “Our collaborative effort with Damen Shipyard is geared towards certifying the seaworthiness of the modular floating dock before its relocation. A thorough commissioning process is essential to ensure the dock’s readiness for operation upon relocation.”

Reports from Ships and Port highlight that Melsmore Marine Nigeria has diligently compiled a feasibility study encompassing the requisite details concerning the mooring system essential for anchoring the modular floating dock securely at the Dolphine Jetty.

This strategic move signifies a significant stride forward in enhancing maritime infrastructure and bolstering operational capabilities in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

As Melsmore Marine Nigeria embarks on this significant undertaking, the successful relocation of the modular floating dock heralds an era of advanced maritime services and capabilities.

The collaboration with NIMASA and the engagement of industry expertise underline the commitment to operational excellence and the development of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
