The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has expressed its readiness to partner with the Federal Ministry of Environment to tackle the environmental issues facing the country and the world.

The NMGS, led by its President Prof. Akinade Olatunji, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, in his office in Abuja on Monday.

The NMGS said it would support the ministry in achieving its co-mandates of the Performance Bond signed with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which include addressing issues such as flooding, pollution, erosion control, land degradation, logging of trees, and climate change.

Prof. Olatunji said Nigeria needs a holistic and evidence-based approach to solving environmental challenges, adding that his
organisation is always ready to provide an enabling environment through its partnership and collaboration with the ministry.

He also invited the Hon. Minister of State to attend their 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition in Jos, scheduled for 18th-20th March, 2024, and their 39th International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry and Health in Abuja, scheduled for 30th June-5th July, 2024.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Salako, appreciated the visit and praised the NMGS for its efforts in promoting environmental awareness and research.

He said the environment drives our health and livelihood, and therefore requires strategy and education to sensitize and inform the populace on the environmental issues.

He said the ministry is working to strengthen the Planning, Research and Statistics Department (PRS) to conduct research on the issues affecting the environment.

He also said the ministry is ready to partner and collaborate with the NMGS and other organisations in providing lasting solutions to the environmental issues in the country and the world at large.
