The Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into an oil theft incident that occurred at a facility operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) near the Port Harcourt International Airport.
Acting on a tipoff, the Army discovered an illicit tapping point within SPDC’s right of way. Suspected oil thieves utilized a pumping machine to extract crude oil, transferring it into a waiting 45,000-litre petrol truck.
Brig. Gen. Eddie Effiong, the Commander of the Nigerian Army 6 Division Garrison, addressed the media about the incident on Monday.
He assured that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out to unveil any collaborators involved in the illegal activity. Once the investigation concludes, both the truck and the confiscated illegal product will be destroyed to deter future transgressions.
Gen. Effiong stated, “In the early hours of Saturday around 2:30 am, we received information about illegal bunkering activities. Our troops were dispatched to investigate, leading to the apprehension of this 45,000-litre capacity tanker, situated within 50 meters of SPDC’s oil facilities. The suspects were arrested on the scene, along with the tools and products they used for their unlawful activities.”
The incident unfolded in the bustling area of Aluu, located in close proximity to the airport. Gen. Effiong emphasized that the pipeline’s operators, Shell, have been informed and have taken measures to prevent further leakage.
He highlighted the imminent legal actions to be taken against the suspects and the thorough investigation to ascertain any potential accomplices.
He stated, “We are determined to uncover any underlying elements involved in this incident. While these individuals may be the ones caught in the act, we will delve further to identify the masterminds. Our focus is on reaching the root of this matter, after which appropriate measures will be taken, including the destruction of the evidence.”
This incident underscores the Army’s commitment to combatting oil theft and protecting the integrity of oil facilities.
The investigation sends a strong message to potential offenders that such activities will not be tolerated, with legal consequences serving as a powerful deterrent.
