Nigeria Unveils Electronic Extension Platform to Boost Agric Production

By Abdullahi Lukman

In a move to revolutionize agricultural service delivery, the federal government has launched the National Electronic Extension Platform (NEEP) to enhance agricultural production.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, said at the launch that the digital initiative aims to bridge the gap between research and farmers, addressing critical challenges within the agricultural sector.

The NEEP, unveiled at the National Agricultural Extension Research Summit in Abuja, is designed to integrate with the National Agricultural Research and Extension System (NARES) and other key institutions.

By providing real-time access to agricultural information, the platform offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional extension services, while also mitigating security risks for field agents.

Dr. Abdullahi emphasized the platform’s role in improving the low extension agent-to-farmer ratio, a significant hurdle in Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

He also highlighted the government’s investment in technology, including the distribution of tractors, to boost labor productivity.

The launch of NEEP is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to leverage technology for agricultural advancement, as outlined in the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP) 2022-2027.

Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ogunbiyi Marcus, acknowledged past challenges, including inconsistent policies and inadequate funding, but expressed optimism about the transformative potential of digital tools.

Dr. Deola Tayo Lordbanjou, Director of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Service, underscored the importance of translating research into practical solutions for farmers.

He noted that NEEP will consolidate previous efforts, such as the National Farmers’ Helpline Centers, by integrating outputs from research institutions, universities, and other stakeholders.

The platform will onboard information from National Agricultural Research Institutes, universities, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Agricultural Development Programs (ADPs), and financial institutions, ensuring the timely dissemination of agricultural innovations and market information, thus improving the nations GDP in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President.
