The federal government has earmarked N100 billion for the installation of solar mini-grids in public institutions, as part of the 2025 budget.
This initiative, known as the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, aims to lower energy costs and reduce reliance on diesel and generator maintenance.
Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), discussed the plans during a recent interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He stated that the project will commence once the budget is ratified by President Bola Tinubu, aiming to provide a sustainable, cost-effective power supply to government facilities.
Aliyu pointed out the significant financial burden that diesel and generator upkeep impose on public institutions, highlighting that substantial funds are diverted annually for these expenses.
He emphasized that the new solar initiative is intended to free up budget resources for other critical sectors in Nigeria’s economy.
As part of this project, solar mini-grids will be specifically deployed in universities and teaching hospitals.
Aliyu noted recent concerns raised by students at the University of Ibadan regarding a prolonged power outage at the University College Hospital, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring reliable electricity supply.
This strategic shift towards renewable energy not only seeks to enhance the operational efficiency of public institutions but also represents a broader commitment to climate-friendly solutions in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
