Nigeria has pledged to deepen its partnership with Hungary in water resources management, as both countries prepare for the Nigerian–Hungarian Water Forum slated for 4 November 2025 in Abuja.

These developments were disclosed in a statement released by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, Director of Information and Public Relations, on 25 September 2025.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, made this known during a courtesy visit by the Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Loránd Endreffy, and the Embassy’s Economic Counsellor, Ms. Judit Beres, to his office in Abuja.

Utsev emphasized the need for effective coordination and complete documentation to support seamless collaboration.

The minister directed that all necessary documents be submitted promptly to enable the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ahead of the forum.

He also confirmed full participation of key officials from water-related agencies and departments.

Ambassador Endreffy highlighted the upcoming forum, which will bring together Nigerian water sector stakeholders and Hungarian companies specializing in water engineering and treatment.

He noted that the event will address key issues such as water security, capacity building, rural water supply, climate resilience, and flood risk management.

Key sessions will include technical presentations, particularly on the Niger River Training and Flood Control Scheme, and the potential signing of a fresh MoU between the National Water Resources Institute (Kaduna) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Renewal of the existing Nigeria–Hungary MoU on water management is also being considered.
