Niger Introduces Monthly Sanitation Day

By Abdullahi Lukman

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has mandated the observance of a monthly Environmental Sanitation Day on the last Saturday of every month.

He made announcement while approving the State Environmental Sanitation and Waste Control Regulations 2025, which seek to enforce stricter cleanliness standards and promote a healthier, cleaner environment.

The new regulations, which took effect immediately upon approval, stipulate that all individuals, properties, and vehicles within the state must maintain clean surroundings at all times, regardless of their location or status.

This directive applies to all residents and property owners, emphasizing the responsibility of each person in ensuring that their environment is free of waste and pollution.

As part of the implementation of these regulations, the last Saturday of each month has been designated as Environmental Sanitation Day.

On this day, movement of persons and vehicles will be restricted from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, giving residents a dedicated period to thoroughly clean their homes, businesses, and surrounding areas.

This time will also be used for proper waste disposal, ensuring that waste is disposed of in a sanitary and environmentally friendly manner.

The restrictions on movement aim to reduce distractions and ensure that everyone can participate in this vital communal effort without interference.

Governor Bago’s decision was made under the authority of Section 5 (1) (2) of the Niger State Environmental Protection Agency Law, 2022 (as amended).

The new mandate builds on existing environmental laws, reinforcing the state’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and healthier living environment for all residents.

By instituting regular, enforced sanitation activities, the state government aims to tackle waste accumulation, prevent the spread of diseases, and improve overall public health.

The introduction of this new regulation comes at a time when there is growing concern over environmental pollution and waste management in urban and rural areas alike.

Governor Bago expressed confidence that these measures will significantly enhance the quality of life for Niger State residents and ensure that the state is cleaner and more sustainable for future generations.

As the program rolls out, local authorities and environmental organizations are expected to play key roles in raising awareness and ensuring compliance with the new regulations.
