The Niger Delta Fishermen Congress (NDFC), representing a group of fish farmers in the Niger Delta region, has extended its commendation to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for its significant support to farmers in coastal communities within the region.
In a statement released by the group and signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Tamuno Jack, the NDFC praised the current NDDC leadership under Samuel Ogbuku for its farmer-oriented initiatives.
The group particularly highlighted the commission’s plans to provide fishing gears, boats, and oil palm processing equipment to fishermen and farmers, deeming it a progressive step that aligns with the agricultural reforms vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
With the recent removal of fuel subsidies affecting livelihoods in the region, the NDFC stressed the urgency of the support.
The group expressed gratitude for the forthcoming initiative, which they believe will empower beneficiaries, boost livelihoods, and contribute to the availability of essential produce.
“We are happy for this great initiative, especially as it would serve as a source of empowerment to beneficiaries when implemented,” the statement read.
The NDFC highlighted the pivotal role that this initiative would play in helping farmers and fishermen in rural communities overcome the challenges posed by the high costs of inputs for fishing and oil production.
Furthermore, they underlined that the timely provision of fishing gears and oil palm processing machines would lead to a reduction in the cost of agricultural production.
This, in turn, would translate into more affordable market costs for food items, benefiting not only the farmers but also consumers.
However, the NDFC urged the NDDC to initiate the program promptly. The group expressed concerns that delays could hamper the program’s effectiveness, especially considering the seasonal demands of oil palm production and fishing activities.
They emphasized the importance of timely implementation to ensure that the objectives of the initiative are fully realized.
Expressing appreciation for the NDDC’s commitment to sustainable livelihoods and the welfare of farmers and fishermen in the Niger Delta region, the NDFC reiterated their expectation for the prompt launch of the program and its subsequent full implementation.
The group’s hopes are set on the positive impact this initiative will have on coastal communities and the enhancement of the region’s agricultural landscape.
