Pupils of LEA Primary School, Apo Resettlement, Abuja, have been educated on climate change, waste management and personal hygiene as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness among children.

The sensitisation programme was organised by SSI Initiatives for Sustainable Development through its Children Climate Club initiative and focused on pupils in Primary 5 and 6 classes.

Founder of the organisation, Shilariju Sylvanus, said the initiative was designed to equip children with basic knowledge of environmental protection and climate change from an early stage.

She described climate change and environmental pollution as major global challenges, stressing the importance of helping children develop positive environmental habits while growing up.

According to her, the project aims to raise young “change makers” who will contribute to environmental sustainability within their communities and beyond. She also revealed plans to extend the initiative to Bauchi and Adamawa states.

The head teacher of the school, Sir Sabo Goje, commended the programme, describing it as timely and impactful. He noted that it supports climate-related topics already included in the school curriculum.

Goje added that pupils had been exposed to practical lessons on environmental responsibility, with noticeable improvements already seen in their attitudes towards waste disposal and personal hygiene both at school and at home.

Some pupils, including Rejoice Gbo and Goodluck Chimaobi, promised to apply the lessons learnt, especially in maintaining personal hygiene and proper waste management.
