The National Emergency Management Agency has urged state governments across Nigeria to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flooding ahead of the 2026 rainy season, warning that more than 30 states could be affected.

NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar made the call during a visit to Adamawa State on Wednesday, where she met with government officials to discuss flood preparedness and disaster response measures. She stressed the need for urgent action to protect lives and property from the anticipated floods.

The agency advised state governments to strengthen preventive measures by reintroducing monthly environmental sanitation exercises, clearing blocked drainages and waterways, and providing greater support for State Emergency Management Agencies.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri commended NEMA for launching early awareness campaigns and assured the agency that Adamawa State would implement its technical recommendations to reduce the impact of
flooding.

According to the state government, the governor also expressed appreciation for NEMA’s continued support during previous emergencies and pledged closer collaboration ahead of the rainy season.

Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most recurring natural disasters, causing widespread destruction to homes, farmlands, and infrastructure each year. Experts say poor drainage systems and the effects of climate change have continued to worsen the situation in many communities.

NEMA said its early warning campaign is aimed at reducing the human and economic losses often associated with severe flooding through timely preparation and coordinated response efforts.
