The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has inaugurated a new Geo-Spatial Centre designed to enhance disaster management through data processing, research, and forecasting.
Formerly known as the Geographic Information System (GIS), the NEMA Geo-Spatial Centre leverages technology across all stages of disaster management, including preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery, and rehabilitation.
During the commissioning ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), highlighted the global challenges posed by escalating disasters such as droughts, floods, desertification, and communal crises arising from land use conflicts.
Akume underscored Nigeria’s vulnerability to these crises, emphasizing the government’s commitment to disaster management efforts aimed at providing vital support to affected communities.
He commended NEMA for establishing the center, noting its pivotal role in disaster forecasting, data mapping, and information management systems.
