The Minna Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a flood warning to residents in Kwara state, Nigeria.
According to Zainab Saidu, the head of NEMA Minna Operations Office, the flood is expected to impact the Ilorin West and Ilorin East Local Government Areas (LGAs) from July to November.
This forecast aligns with the earlier predictions made in the Annual Flood Outlook released by the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA), which indicated a high flood risk in these areas.
Additionally, other LGAs, including Patigi, Offa, Edu, and Oyun, have been categorized as moderate flood risk areas, likely to experience significant flooding during the same period.
Ms. Saidu emphasized the importance of taking precautions to protect lives and properties, particularly as Kwara has already witnessed flood and windstorm incidents in some areas.
Residents in the identified flood-prone areas are urged to keep drains clean to prevent water blockage and ensure the free flow of waterways and channels.
Moreover, individuals residing near river banks or in flood-prone zones are advised to prepare for relocation to safer and higher ground as a precautionary measure.
The water level along River Niger is rising, and its tributaries are expected to experience overflow, potentially impacting settlements around the rivers.
Ms. Saidu stressed the significance of heeding these warnings and taking preventive measures to avert disasters. By acting proactively, people can safeguard their lives and properties during this flood-prone period.
