The National Emergency Management Agency has commenced a flood sensitisation campaign in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu states to prepare residents of high-risk communities for anticipated flooding during the 2026 rainy season.

The campaign, covered by the News Agency of Nigeria, is part of early warning efforts targeting flood-prone areas identified through seasonal climate forecasts.

NEMA officials leading the exercise said the sensitisation focuses on raising awareness about evacuation procedures, risk prevention and community preparedness measures.

“The essence of the sensitisation is to alert communities in flood-prone areas to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of flooding,” a NEMA zonal coordinator said, according to NAN.

The agency explained that the outreach is being carried out in collaboration with state and local emergency stakeholders to improve response capacity at the community level.

It added that previous flood incidents have highlighted gaps in awareness and preparedness, making early engagement with vulnerable communities necessary.

State emergency actors participating in the campaign emphasised the need for residents to heed warnings and comply with safety advisories issued during the rainy season.

For NatureNews, the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness as climate-driven flooding continues to pose risks across Nigeria.
