The Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Dr. Silas Ali Agara, has called for increased and sustained support for the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to strengthen national flood preparedness and disaster mitigation.
Agara made the appeal during the launch of a fundraising initiative for flood readiness, held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja.
Agara warned that recurring floods continue to devastate small businesses, farmlands and rural livelihoods, stressing that NIHSA plays a critical role in environmental protection, job security and community stability.
He said investing in the agency amounts to investing in environmental safety, economic resilience and sustainable national development.
NIHSA’s Director-General, Alh. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, said the fundraiser is vital to securing resources for comprehensive flood and erosion control efforts.
He urged government institutions, private organisations and development partners to support the initiative.
NIHSA manages the country’s hydrological systems through nationwide data collection and monitoring of rivers, groundwater, and water levels.
The agency provides essential data for irrigation planning, flood control, water supply projects and drought mitigation, contributing to long-term water resource management and infrastructure development.
