The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) has announced a collaborative effort with the Canadian government to advance gender-responsive climate change initiatives in Nigeria.
This initiative was unveiled by Salisu Dahiru, the director-general of NCCC on Friday, during a one-day workshop in Abuja.
According to him, the work shop was aimed at refining a draft report on gender-responsive climate action in the country.
Dahiru emphasized the indispensable role of gender equality in effective climate action and emphasized the importance of sensitization, mobilization, education, capacity building, and empowerment to enhance climate change resilience.
He expressed appreciation to the Canadian High Commission and other technical partners for their support and called for deeper collaboration to catalyze development projects and bolster initiatives focused on climate change adaptation and mitigation in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the director-general appealed for increased Canadian investment in Nigeria, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to facilitating private sector partnerships that advance climate change solutions in the country.
Assuring that the workshop would align with United Nations Climate Change guidelines on gender inclusivity, Dahiru underscored the importance of international collaboration in achieving sustainable climate action.
During the workshop, Likezo Karn, a senior development officer from the Government of Canada, emphasized Canada’s commitment to gender equality in its international assistance approach.
Karn explained that Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy aims to ensure equal participation and consideration of all genders in development programs, recognizing the differential impacts of climate change on men and women.
