Great Britain’s Poppy Maskill secured her third gold medal at the Paris Paralympics, triumphing in the women’s S14 100m backstroke.
At just 19 years old, Maskill has continued her impressive performance, adding to her earlier wins of two golds and two silvers. Despite trailing Valeriia Shabalina at the halfway point, Maskill made a strong comeback, finishing with a time of 1:05.74. British swimmer Olivia Newman-Baronius earned the bronze.
Maskill’s victory contributed to ParalympicsGB’s total of 41 gold medals in Paris, matching the team’s record from Tokyo three years ago.
“I was a bit disappointed because it wasn’t a personal best, but it’s still a gold medal, so I can’t complain too much,” Maskill said. “I’m happy with my achievements, but I know I can improve my time.”
With five medals, Maskill now holds the record for the most medals won by any ParalympicsGB athlete.
This gold medal adds to Maskill’s victories in the 100m S14 butterfly and the mixed 4x100m S14 freestyle relay. She also earned silver in the 200m freestyle S14 and the 200m individual medley S14.
Earlier in the Games, Mark Tompsett, 17, won bronze in the men’s S14 100m backstroke, while Maisie Summers-Newton sectured a bronze in the women’s S6 400m freestyle, adding to her two gold medals from Paris.
