The newly appointed Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, has underscored the importance of patronizing made-in-Nigeria vehicles as a means to foster the growth of the Nigerian automotive sector.
Osanipin made this appeal during his inaugural visit to the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) factory in Nnewi, Anambra State, on November 14, 2023.
During the visit, Osanipin commended the quality and quantity of vehicles produced by Innoson, particularly highlighting a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle with an impressive range of over 1,000 kilometers on a fully filled cylinder.
He expressed his appreciation, stating, “From what I have seen here today, I think I have a better understanding of what IVM is doing in terms of quality and quantity. These are eye-openers for us. These are the things we did not know before now that are happening here at Innoson.”
Osanipin emphasized the need for increased awareness of the capabilities of the local automotive industry, stating that the NADDC is set to collaborate with the Nigeria Automotive Manufacturers Association to achieve this.
He emphasized the importance of bringing such information to the knowledge of the government and fleet operators.
The NADDC Director General also stressed the potential for economic growth and development within the Nigerian Automotive Industry, provided it receives proper attention and incentives.
“There are a lot of opportunities in the auto industry, and I stand for made-in-Nigeria vehicles. We need to support and patronize made-in-Nigeria vehicles, and by the time we embrace it, there would be a significant development in the industry,” he declared.
Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the CEO of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, expressed gratitude for the NADDC’s timely visit and unwavering support. Chukwuma revealed that the new factory under construction is dedicated to the production of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, focusing on mass transit solutions and individual or corporate needs.
“I appreciate the Director General’s recognition of our efforts and commitment to supporting local manufacturers. This visit by our new DG is essential for him to get more ideas on what to do. I’m grateful to him for coming,” Chukwuma added.
The collaboration between NADDC and Innoson signals a positive step towards advancing the Nigerian automotive sector and promoting the adoption of locally manufactured vehicles.
