The death toll from the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has risen to 151, up from the 111 reported yesterday, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed on Saturday.

NEMA spokesperson Ibrahim Hussain disclosed that in addition to the increased fatalities, 11 people remain injured and over 3,000 residents have been displaced.

The flash floods, caused by heavy rains on Wednesday night, severely affected three communities including Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, damaging about 265 houses and destroying two bridges and two roads.

In response to the worsening situation, a high-level federal delegation led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, visited the affected areas to coordinate relief efforts and deliver President Bola Tinubu’s condolences.

During the visit, the delegation met with Niger State Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who thanked the federal government for its swift intervention amid the growing crisis.

The President has ordered the immediate deployment of federal resources to support victims and expedite recovery.

NEMA continues to work closely with state authorities to ensure aid reaches displaced families and to recover victims.

The National Orientation Agency has also been tasked with ramping up flood preparedness campaigns to help mitigate future disasters.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs announced that the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons will assume responsibility for ongoing support to those displaced by the floods.
