In a concerted effort to ensure the safety and resilience of Nigeria against potential flooding during the ongoing rainy season, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, and the Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Esq., jointly tasked State Governors to ensure comprehensive preparedness of flood threats.
The ministers said this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday. Their message not only highlighted concerns but also offered concrete solutions to mitigate the risks.
To address the rising water levels in the River Benue, Prof. Utsev emphasized the critical importance of enhancing the country’s monitoring and early warning systems.
He said the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s (NIHSA) vigilant observation of this increase in flow provides with valuable data.
However, this data must translate into actionable information. He also said the Ministry, in partnership with NIHSA, will intensify efforts to provide timely and accurate information to communities at risk.
Recognizing Nigeria’s position within the Niger River Basin, Prof. Utsev acknowledged the need for robust regional collaboration.
The Minister emphasized that Nigeria will continue to work closely with Cameroon’s National Hydrological Services. Sharing information on water releases is crucial to managing downstream risks effectively.
The Ministers also highlighted the need for proactive community engagement and the relocation of individuals residing along river banks to safer locations. This step is fundamental in reducing the potential loss of life and property during floods.
According to them, the Ministry will collaborate with state governments to ensure that these measures are implemented swiftly and efficiently.
Investment in infrastructure, especially drainage systems, is a key component of our flood preparedness strategy. The ministers assured that the Ministry will work with relevant agencies to intensify drainage maintenance and construct new drainage systems where necessary.
This infrastructure investment not only reduces the risk of flooding but also contributes to the overall development of our communities.
Prof. Utsev emphasized the importance of protecting our natural environment. Unauthorized structures within floodplains disrupt natural water flow. The Ministry will take decisive action to remove such structures.
