Lagos Pulls Down Shanties, Illegal Structures Along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway

Following the expiration of the ultimatum issued by the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the Federal Government has begun the demolition of shanties, illegal structures encroaching on its Right of Way (RoW).

The minister had given owners of the illegal structure two weeks to vacate the RoW of the bridge to pave way for the ongoing Apapa-Oshodi-OjotaOworonshoki expressway reconstruction.

He advised them to relocate to the Matori Industrial Estate in Ladipo to carry out their commercial activities.

Explaining the reason behind the demolition, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Olukayode Popoola said the traders did not obey all notices served them, noting that the shanties have delayed the beautification and the reconstruction of the Toyota section of the busy expressway.

“With the reclamation of the right of way now, works on the beautification of the way and reconstruction of the Toyota section of the dual carriageway are expected to commence immediately by contractors.”

Popoola further said that the Minister of Works and Housing had held a meeting ‘with them on January 14, 2021, over their illegal occupation of the right of way, and gave them time to vacate the place for reconstruction works.’
