A devastating fire broke out in the Amukoko area of Lagos, on Wednesday at around 1am, causing significant damage and impacting the livelihoods of many destroying a section of the plank market.

More than 351 shops were destroyed, and over 1,000 traders have been displaced as a result.

The Co-ordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident.

He mentioned that the affected shops, along with 25 additional structures, were accommodating groups of traders. The Secretary of the traders’ association, Mr. Sola Oyegoke, who assessed the situation, shared that the market management follows a routine of switching off electricity supply from 10pm and turning it back on at 8am during market days.

Despite the precautionary measures in place, the Co-ordinator of NEMA in the South-West could not confirm the exact cause of the incident.

He mentioned that the market management takes thorough steps to ensure no naked fire is left before closing the market for the day.

According to Mr. Oyegoke, the plank market is not just limited to selling planks. It also accommodates other artisans like tailors and printers who have their separate sections there.

He mentioned that the traders’ association has a membership list with 1,058 registered members. During the assessment, it was observed that two residential buildings close to the market were also affected by the fire.

Mr. Farinloye shared that the traders have already cleared away the burnt milling and sewing machines.

NEMA is reminding Nigerians to be extra cautious during the upcoming dry season. As the atmosphere becomes drier, there are increased challenges and potential risks. It’s important for everyone to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions.
