Lagos Launches Campaign to Promote Clean Energy, Reduce Vehicle Emissions

The Lagos State Government has launched a week-long campaign tagged EcoMove Lagos 2025, aimed at promoting clean energy, reducing vehicle emissions, and encouraging eco-friendly transportation practices across the state.

The campaign, which began on Saturday, April 26, 2025, with a road show spanning major locations from Oshodi to Lekki Phase One, is spearheaded by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and executed by the Ministry of Transportation.

With the theme: “EcoMove: Connecting Communities, Reducing Emissions, The Role of Public Transportation in Achieving Sustainable Goals”, the initiative focuses on the adoption of sustainable transport systems like electric vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles.

Mr. Toyin Aremu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, described the initiative as the first of its kind in Lagos, highlighting its alignment with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a healthier, more sustainable city.

Aremu stressed that vehicle emissions significantly affect residents’ health and called for collaborative efforts from stakeholders to reduce carbon emissions.

“This campaign supports the Federal Government’s CNG initiative and aims to reduce emissions and promote clean energy,” Aremu said. “It’s also about reducing costs and improving public health. We need drivers, transport operators, and all residents to engage and support this effort.”

He further urged the public to utilize government-owned transport systems to help reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and advised drivers to follow traffic rules and use designated parks for passenger pick-up.

The road show featured participation from agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Service, and the Nigeria Police.

Their presence symbolized the joint commitment to cleaner, safer transportation in the state.

Mr. Suraj Adebakin, Coordinator of EcoMove Lagos, described Lagos as a cosmopolitan hub poised to lead Africa’s transition to clean transport.

He said the initiative not only targets carbon reduction but also youth empowerment through technical training in eco-transport technologies.

The campaign began with a clean-up exercise in mechanic villages and a medical outreach at motor parks, where drivers received free health screenings and medication.

“This programme creates synergy between traffic agencies and the public,” Adebakin added. “It’s about building a sustainable society that values both economic growth and environmental health.”

Officials confirmed that EcoMove Lagos 2025 will be an ongoing campaign aimed at long-term transformation of the state’s transportation landscape.
