The Kwara State Government has intensified its environmental enforcement by sealing six facilities in Ilorin over non-compliance with noise pollution regulations.

The operation, carried out on Monday, marks the beginning of a broader clampdown on establishments that exceed permissible noise levels across the state.

Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, stated that the government had exercised patience and diplomacy with businesses whose activities generate noise but could no longer ignore the discomfort caused to residents, especially in residential areas.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, the commissioner revealed that the ministry had been inundated with daily complaints about noise disturbances.

She explained that inaction would amount to endorsing environmental violations, prompting the government to begin sealing facilities emitting sound beyond acceptable limits.

“Those who want to trade in noise should prepare adequately, soundproof their facilities, or strictly adhere to the stipulated guidelines,” Buge warned.

She confirmed that six establishments had already been shut down, with more closures expected until compliance improves across Ilorin.

The commissioner further urged the public, including religious organizations, to respect noise control limits of 55 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night, noting that adherence is crucial for public health and general wellbeing.

According to her, the ministry’s ongoing enforcement is aimed at protecting citizens from the adverse effects of excessive noise, which has been linked to stress, hearing loss, and reduced productivity.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful and healthy environment where economic activities can coexist with residents’ comfort.

The exercise, she said, will continue until a culture of environmental responsibility becomes firmly entrenched across Kwara State.
