Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, wife of the Kogi State Governor, has called on parents to instill sustainable environmental practices and climate change awareness in their children.
She gave the message on Thursday as part of the 2024 International Day of Families commemoration in the state.
Emphasizing the family’s role in shaping habits, Hajia Sefinat highlighted the potential of the family unit to combat pollution, improper waste disposal, and promote tree planting and recycling.
She underscored the severe impacts of climate change, such as flooding and drought, which have led to displacement, hunger, and disease.
Advocating for educational measures and lifestyle changes to mitigate climate change effects, she assured that government programs from her office would continue supporting vulnerable groups.
The first lady also urged parents to remain diligent in raising morally sound children.
The 2024 International Day of Families focuses on “Families and Climate Change,” aiming to raise awareness of family-related issues and the socio-economic processes affecting them.
