Residents of Tharaka Nithi County in Kenya have been advised to venture into avocado and macadamia processing for export as well as to create employment.
The Vice Chancellor of Chuka University, Erastus Njoka, gave the advice while addressing a group of residents.
He said avocado and macadamia business has been a source of wealth to many people in the world.
Speaking on the need to have agribusiness industries in Tharaka Nithi County, the Vice-Chancellor said it will provide a steady source of income and uplift the livelihoods of the local residents.
“We would like people to invest in mashinani, that way, they will be able to boost their livelihoods through creation of employment in the industries,” he said.
While encouraging farmers on intensifying more crops varieties, the Vice-Chancellor said that the county is blessed with good soils to grow banana, coffee and tea, therefore, farmers should explore other varieties of crops and fruits such as apples, KNA said.
“We have a very good climate here that can favour the growth of different varieties of foods, we should take advantage of it and diversify our farm produce,” he advised residents.
