Kano State Government has expressed commitment to addressing the escalating problem of soil erosion in Gwarzo Local Government Area.
The commitment, according to Gwarzo Zonal Information Officer, Auwalu Musa, follows an official visit by a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Environment to assess the damage caused by soil erosion in various parts of the local government area and propose practical solutions.
The federal team was received by the Vice Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government, Abdulmumin Garba Lakwaya, who represented the Council Chairman, Dr. Mani Tsoho Gwarzo.
During the visit, Lakwaya appealed to the visiting federal team to support the Kano State Government’s efforts in combating the environmental threat.
He emphasized that the administration of Governor Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf is determined to provide effective solutions to the persistent erosion challenges threatening the safety and livelihoods of the residents of Gwarzo.
“The Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf is fully committed to putting an end to the problem of soil erosion in Gwarzo,” said Lakwaya.
To offer firsthand insights into the extent of the damage, the Vice Chairman led the delegation on a tour of several affected areas.
These included Unguwar Tsamiya and Lakwaya Main Market in Lakwaya Ward, Malamawa in Jama’a Ward, the Gwarzo town cemetery, and locations behind the Getso Main Market in Getso Ward.
Engineer Muhammad Kabir, who led the federal team, said the primary aim of the visit was to evaluate the impact of soil erosion and recommend sustainable interventions.
“We are here to assess the extent of the damage caused by soil erosion and to explore lasting solutions to mitigate its impact,” Kabir explained.
He assured that upon returning to Abuja, the team would compile their observations into a detailed report, including proposed actions to effectively combat erosion in the area.
“We will submit a comprehensive report and propose measures to address this issue,” he added.
The inspection team included key stakeholders such as councillors representing the affected wards of Lakwaya, Jama’a, and Getso, the Village Head of Getso, and the Adviser to the Chairman on Information and Public Enlightenment.
The joint inspection reflects an important step in strengthening intergovernmental collaboration on environmental management and protection.
Residents in the affected communities expressed hope that the state and federal governments will swiftly implement necessary actions to curb the worsening environmental degradation in Gwarzo.
