It’s green swearing-in for members at Thrikkakara

The Haritha Karma Sena of Thrikkakara municipality has launched a green event management team which is specialized in organizing eco-friendly events. The 74-member team has already made itself distinct by setting up Haritha polling booth and Haritha counting centre during the election time.
The Sena has been professionally managing the waste collection and disposal in the local body, which is the joint effort of Thrikkakara municipality and a professional partner Pelican Foundation. The foundation is an empanelled agency of Haritha Keralam and Suchitwa missions.
We were asked to organize a swearing-in ceremony adhering to green protocol. Our team has senior men and women who are good in weaving and making designs with leaves, stems and flowers. The youngsters do the decorations based on this work,” said Pelican Foundation project coordinator Sujith K N.
Banana leaves, stems, palm and coconut leaves, bamboo, jute, coir, etc. are used as basic material for the decorations. Steel jugs and glasses were leased out while bamboo baskets were placed as waste bins.
The team organized green swearing-in event for both district panchayat and Thrikkakara municipality. For the notice boards, bamboo or leaves were used and there were no banners. “We work on the premise of zero waste generation at the end of an event. Our aim is very clear. No use of plastic or any non-biodegradable material and keep it green and very eco-friendly,” he said.
Officials with Haritha Keralam and Suchitwa missions have been encouraging such initiatives in government programmes so that others will also follow suit. “With the Sena members getting a good remuneration, it is expected that they will be equally enthusiastic to become professionals,” officials said.
