Morocco is experiencing a significant stride in sustainable practices as Smurfit Kappa, the renowned Irish recycled paper packaging company, introduces its cutting-edge recycling plant. Situated within the Ain Aouda industrial estate in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, this facility marks a landmark achievement in the African packaging industry and sets the stage for the company’s expansion initiatives across the continent.
Smurfit Kappa, a trailblazing player in the field of packaging, has taken the lead in establishing a groundbreaking recycling plant. This substantial 25,000 square-meter facility focuses on transforming used paper into corrugated board, catering to sectors like agriculture, automotive, textiles, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, and niche markets such as meat, fishing, and ceramics.
Nestled within the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region of Morocco, the recycling plant strategically positions itself within the Ain Aouda industrial estate.
In early days of the month, a significant chapter was scripted as the plant was inaugurated. This event marks a monumental milestone not only for Smurfit Kappa but also for the broader landscape of recycling practices in Africa.
The decision to establish the facility within the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region stems from the area’s prominence, accounting for over 70% of the nation’s cardboard packaging consumption. This strategic choice of location accentuates the pivotal role that Rabat plays in advancing this pioneering initiative.
The plant’s technological prowess is underscored by its state-of-the-art equipment, representing the epitome of “ultra-modern” advancements in recycling. A noteworthy feature is the plant’s complete reliance on solar power, powered by an impressive array of 1,500 solar panels generating 800 kWp of energy. This solar setup is projected to yield an annual electricity production of 1.3 GWh, catering to more than half of the plant’s energy demands.
In terms of sustainability, the plant’s commitment to energy efficiency is further manifested through its gas consumption optimization technology, resulting in an 18% reduction compared to conventional setups. An integrated water treatment system echoes urban wastewater treatment plants, employing a dual physico-chemical and biological purification process. This innovation culminates in a remarkable 50% reduction in water consumption, a testament to the plant’s holistic approach to sustainability.
Aiming to minimize its carbon footprint, the plant ingeniously repurposes heat generated during compressor operations to heat sanitary water in offices and changing rooms. This innovative approach, combined with the aforementioned technologies, translates into an impressive annual reduction of 900 tonnes in the plant’s carbon footprint.
The project, representing an investment of €3 million, aligns seamlessly with Smurfit Kappa’s vision of fostering sustainable practices. This innovative step not only contributes to environmental preservation but also extends its impact to uplift local industries and communities.
The unveiling of this ambitious project represents a milestone for Smurfit Kappa’s dedication to sustainability and its resolute commitment to making significant contributions on both environmental and local industry fronts. This pioneering leap in sustainable practices sets new standards for the packaging industry in Africa and beyond.
