Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for responsible journalism as a crucial tool to combat the spread of fake news and misinformation.

He conveyed this message during an interactive session with the Nigerian Guild of Editors on November 6.

In his discussion with senior media editors and executives, the minister stressed the need for a free and conducive environment for media operations while emphasizing the responsibility of media practitioners.

This perspective echoes President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appeal to all Nigerians, with particular emphasis on media professionals.

Minister Idris underscored the pivotal role of responsible journalism in addressing the challenges posed by fake news, misinformation, and propaganda. He highlighted the media’s significant influence in shaping public opinion and influencing policy decisions.

Furthermore, the Minister revealed that the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation (FMINO) is actively implementing a comprehensive reorientation campaign aimed at fostering unity, patriotism, and the promotion of positive cultural values among Nigerians.

Idris also disclosed that the administration of President Tinubu is working on short- and medium-term interventions to mitigate the effects of eliminating oil subsidies and other reforms, with the aim of alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian populace.

In summary, Minister Mohammed Idris’s call for responsible journalism and the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation’s efforts to promote unity and positive values underscore the importance of media practitioners’ role in countering fake news and misinformation while shaping public discourse and policy decisions in Nigeria.

Additionally, the government’s initiatives aim to address pressing economic and social challenges.
