Following the tragic explosion that rocked Ibadan last week, the Oyo State council of Obas and Chiefs has pledged to work with the government of Oyo state to curb the menace of illegal mining in the state.
The explosion, which was caused by explosives stored by illegal miners, killed at least 10 people and displaced many others.
The incident also exposed the security threats posed by illegal mining activities, which are prevalent in some parts of the state.
The council of Obas and Chiefs, led by the Olugbon of Orile Igbon Oba Francis Olusola-Alao, visited governor Seyi Makinde at his office in Agodi, Ibadan, to express their sympathy and solidarity.
Oba Alao said that the council was ready to collaborate with the government by providing adequate intelligence and effective policing strategies to fight against illegal miners in the state.
He said that the council would also sensitise their subjects on the dangers and consequences of illegal mining.
He commended governor Makinde for his swift response to the disaster and his efforts to liaise with the federal government and relevant agencies to address the issue of illegal mining and gemstone markets in the state.
He said that the council was proud of the governor and his administration for their commitment to improving the lives of the people in Oyo state.
