Renowned renewable energy enterprise Iberdrola has introduced “Carbon2Nature,” a forward-looking initiative with the core objective of developing impactful nature-based solution projects.
The initiative is dedicated to reducing the global carbon footprint, enhancing biodiversity, and fostering a sustainable economy.
As part of its vision, Iberdrola aims to capture and store over 61 million tonnes of CO2 through the promotion of conservation and restoration projects across more than 100,000 hectares.
These projects primarily encompass forests, coastal ecosystems (blue carbon), and agricultural soils.
The projects initiated by Carbon2Nature are expected to not only prevent emissions through ecosystem preservation but also contribute to additional carbon sequestration.
This dual approach is anticipated to generate numerous environmental and societal advantages.
Guided by a strategic business plan that prioritizes regions where Iberdrola operates and where nature-based solutions exhibit significant potential, Carbon2Nature’s primary focus is on Latin American countries like Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile. These nations are projected to host approximately 80% of the initiative’s projects.
Meanwhile, countries in the northern hemisphere, including Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal, will account for the remaining 20%. Carbon2Nature has already initiated project development in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Spain.
Every project initiated by Carbon2Nature will be subjected to rigorous certification procedures adhering to internationally recognized quality standards.
This certification will underscore the projects’ contributions not only to carbon reduction but also to the enhancement of biodiversity, the well-being of local communities, and the achievement of other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Carbon2Nature underscores Iberdrola’s unwavering dedication to a sustainable energy model that harmonizes with both the environment and society.
This model is underpinned by two primary objectives: achieving net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2040 and realizing a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2030.
The program’s ecosystem encompasses a diverse array of over 7,500 startups, including industry leaders such as Wallbox, a manufacturer of electric vehicle charging solutions, and Stem, a provider of intelligent battery storage solutions.
These partnerships signify Iberdrola’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration across sectors to drive sustainable progress and forge a path toward a greener, more balanced future.
