Hyundai Unveils All-electric IONIQ line in Middle East, Africa

...Pledges Sustainable Future

Hyundai Motor Middle East and Africa Headquarters, has announced its plans for sustainability and electric mobility that was distinguished by being held in a “Net Zero”. The announcement was made during a World Press Conference at the SEE Institute in the Sustainable City in Dubai, United Arabs Emirates.

Using the IONIQ sub-brand, which stands for the Hyundai electric car lineup, HMC showcased the company’s vision for electric mobility during the event.

The battery-electric IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models, which were both introduced for the first time in the Middle East and are regarded as some of the most highly regarded electric vehicles globally, were on display at the event.

“Progress for humanity is the message guiding Hyundai Motor Company’s future vision, through the electric IONIQ lineup, where we develop pioneering technologies to achieve sustainability within a framework of humanity,” stated Bryan Park, Head of Hyundai Motor Company Middle East and Africa Headquarters, on this occasion.

He said: “We are pleased to announce today, the implementation of our sustainable strategy and our certain path towards electric mobility, which aligns with the objectives and ambitious plans of the Middle Eastern countries to initiate the shift towards emissions-free mobility.”

During the occasion, media guests had the opportunity to drive IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 automobiles, which are all electric.

The inventive design language of the IONIQ 5 was inspired by Hyundai’s ’45’ EV concept, which made its premiere at the 2019 International Motor Show Germany. Inspired by Hyundai’s “Sensuous Sportiness” design philosophy, the “45” had a futuristic cabin with electrification and autonomous technologies, as well as a monocoque-style body.

While IONIQ 5 does the same, it goes one step further by providing a technologically sophisticated, environmentally responsible, and customer-focused bridge to the future of electric mobility.

The distinct exterior design of the IONIQ 5 is distinguished by its sharp, clean lines, which give it a polished appearance. The BEV seems sharp and nearly geometric due to its meticulously sculpted surfaces and shapes.

Furthermore, Hyundai’s front and back lights include state-of-the-art Parametric Pixel lighting. This distinctive design cue, which will be present in all future IONIQ cars, represents Hyundai’s intention to completely rethink electric mobility.

Because of its extended wheelbase, the crossover body type of the IONIQ 5 achieves distinctive proportions and small overhangs. The midsize CUV IONIQ 5 has dimensions of 4,635 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height on a 3,000 mm wheelbase, providing D-segment-like room.

IONIQ 5 distinguishes itself from other midsize CUVs, notably those with internal combustion engines and traditional steer-by-wire systems because the E-GMP permits a flat floor where the model’s batteries are placed.
This allows for creative interior design and more legroom.

The 3,000 mm wheelbase of the IONIQ 5 gives this midsize CUV the roominess of a large passenger car. Instead of using a traditional car design theme, Hyundai’s designers were able to implement a “Living Space” motif into the cabin because to the large wheelbase.

The gear selector on the Universal Island movable console, which is situated behind the steering wheel, matches the straightforward centre fascia. When parking in a small space, the sliding console not only gives passengers greater flexibility, but it also permits them to freely enter and exit the cabin on either side.

The centre console’s USB ports, cup holders, and 15 W quick wireless phone charger are also available to second-row passengers. Compared to a static storage box, Universal Island offers more versatility, genuinely reinventing the centre console.

Since the ceiling of IONIQ 5 is made out of a single, huge glass panel without any supporting components, the space feels more open thanks to the vision roof.

The trunk capacity of the IONIQ 5 is 531 litres, but when the second-row seats are folded all the way down, that capacity rises to nearly 1,600 litres. The second-row seats can be folded in a 6:4 ratio and pushed forward by up to 135 mm for further mobility.

Customers may also benefit from extra storage space with a front trunk that can hold up to 57 litres, which is especially helpful for longer trips when more luggage is being carried.

There’s a metal insert next to the digital gauge cluster that can carry a multifunction tray holder. The infotainment system of the IONIQ 5 is the first to use the Jong-e Graphic User Interface (GUI), a new design motif that enables a variety of interior ambience settings, including gentle, delicate, and exuberant.

During the winter, customers may stay warm by utilising the heated front seat and steering wheel features.

There are three interior colour options available to customers. Obsidian Black and Dark Pebble Gray/Dove Grey are included in the standard pack, while Dark Teal/Dove Grey is available in the optional colour pack.

The electrification of IONIQ 5 is only one aspect of their ongoing environmental responsibility demonstration. IONIQ’s brand strategy is centred around sustainability, which is evident in the eco-friendly materials and colours inspired by nature used throughout IONIQ 5.

Eco-friendly, sustainably derived materials, such as recycled PET bottles, plant-based (bio PET) yarns and natural wool yarns, eco-processed leather with plant-based extracts, and bio paint with plant extracts, are used in many of its interior touchpoints, including the seats, headliner, door trim, floor, and armrest.

An environmentally friendly solar roof is another option for the IONIQ 5. This roof enhances the vehicle’s electric power source by gathering sunlight and transferring it to the battery pack, hence increasing efficiency. While adding to the driving range, the solar roof can stop battery drain.

With no performance sacrifices, IONIQ 5 is offered in a variety of power electric (PE) configurations to meet the needs of each customer in terms of mobility.

An all-wheel drive (AWD) version with a 72.6-kWh battery is the top of the electric motor lineup, generating a combined power output of 225 kWh and 605 Nm of torque. In 5.2 seconds, this PE setup can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. With the 58-kWh battery and AWD option, this dual-motor configuration can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.

With a rear motor, the single-motor arrangement provides two-wheel drive (2WD) and 350 Nm of torque. The 72.6-kWh battery that this PE is equipped with allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. It takes 8.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 km/h to 100 km/h when using the 58-kWh battery.

Furthermore, the IONIQ 5 is capable of towing a caravan weighing up to 1,600 kg.

IONIQ 5 drivers can begin and stop charging with a single click on their smartphone app thanks to remote charging. With Remote Climate Control, users can programme the IONIQ 5 to pre-heat when it is connected to an external power source during the colder months.

This not only conserves battery power that would otherwise be required to heat the car while driving, but it also guarantees the comfort of the passengers during the trip.

Simple voice commands may be used to conveniently operate the IONIQ 5’s Dynamic Voice Recognition system, which also allows for the management of additional features like the radio, heated steering wheel, heated/cooled seats, and hatch opening/closing.

Additionally, the system can help with updates on stock market data, weather conditions, and different sites of interest (POI).

Additionally, the IONIQ 5 has a high-end Bose audio system. Its eight speakers—which include a subwoofer—are arranged thoughtfully throughout the car to provide an excellent sound system.

The Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), which essentially converts the windscreen into a display screen, is a feature that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers for the first time.

Through the use of augmented reality (AR) technology, drivers can choose to show pertinent information across the windscreen, including navigation, advanced safety features, and their immediate surroundings. This enables drivers to swiftly assimilate information while maintaining focus on the road ahead.

Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) on the IONIQ 5 facilitates more convenient highway driving. HDA 2 attempts to maintain the car centred in its lane while controlling the speed and following distance using the front view camera, radar sensors, and navigation data. Additionally, it can help the driver when lane-changing.

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system is capable of identifying and preventing collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

It covers lane-changing approaching, junction turning, and/or junction crossing. When a driver turns left at an intersection, FCA with Junction Turning engages the brakes if it detects approaching traffic.

In situations where a driver is travelling straight through an intersection, FCA with Junction Crossing detects cars arriving from the side. Lane changes are safer when done using FCA and Lane-Change Oncoming.

When a driver is changing lanes, if there is no risk of a secondary collision, FCA will automatically assist with avoidance steering if it detects an oncoming vehicle that has crossed the centre line. FCA will only issue a warning in the event that it detects a possible secondary accident.

High Beam Assist (HBA), which automatically switches on and off high lights to prevent blinding oncoming drivers, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), which modifies vehicle speed to match the speed limit, are two further semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

The various driver attention-related features of IONIQ 5 determine whether the driver is sleepy or distracted, ensuring safety at all times. When indicators of a driver’s inattention are recognised, Driver Attention Warning (DAW) indicates the driver’s attention level and issues a warning.

When a car is stopped for an extended amount of time (such at a traffic light) and the driver doesn’t move rapidly enough to keep up with the moving vehicle in front of them, DAW will sound a warning.

In a range of driving scenarios, multiple functions cooperate to assist prevent collisions. Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) uses radar to identify other vehicles and provides differential braking as needed to help prevent collisions at the rear of the vehicle.

When changing lanes or pulling out of parallel parking, BCA is very helpful. When a driver signals to change lanes, another feature called Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) employs a camera to display views to the left and right of the car on the cluster screen.

Safe Exit Assist (SEA), which keeps the electronic child lock on when there is approaching traffic, helps keep the back doors locked, further ensuring the safety of passengers in the backseat of the IONIQ 5.

Parking in a range of situations is now easier thanks to a number of parking assistance features. The vehicle’s exterior can be used to remotely park or exit a position thanks to Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA).

This feature may be engaged using a button on the smart key for the car and is useful for both parallel and perpendicular parking.

The Surround picture Monitor (SVM) makes parking in confined areas easier by providing the driver with a 360-degree picture of the area surrounding the car through the use of a series of strategically placed cameras.

While backing up, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) helps prevent crashes. Rear-view camera or rear ultrasonic sensor detection of an obstruction causes PCA to flash a warning and, if required, apply the brakes. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) functions similarly; if a car approaches from the left or right and the driver doesn’t stop, it can apply the brakes or display and sound a warning.

The IONIQ 6 Electrified Streamliner, which redefines the limits of electric mobility with an array of cutting-edge technology, customizable space and features, and longer range, was introduced by Hyundai Motor Company as the new model in the brand’s IONIQ all-electric portfolio.

The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard states that the IONIQ 6 has an estimated all-electric range of over 610 km.

Additionally, the Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) enables incredibly quick 400-V/800-V multi-charging.

Along with a host of powerful features that improve the electric mobility experience, like Dual Colour Ambient Lighting, Speed Sync Lighting, EV Performance Tune-up, and Electric Active Sound Design (e-ASD), it may have Hyundai’s most aerodynamic appearance to date.

With the option of 18- or 20-inch wheels, the electrified streamliner’s 2,950-mm wheelbase is incredibly lengthy thanks to the utilisation of E-GMP. Surrounded by a sea of identical EVs, the IONIQ 6 stands out with its astounding 4,855 mm overall length, 1,880-mm width, and 1,495-mm height.

The interior of the IONIQ 6 was especially designed to function as a cosy and unique retreat. With the Dual Colour Ambient Lighting, a driver can choose from a palette of 64 colours and six pre-selected themes to alter the interior cabin’s appearance and atmosphere.

The first-row interior lighting’s brightness is adjusted in accordance with the vehicle’s speed using the Speed Sync Lighting mode, which enhances the driving experience emotionally.

The optional Comfort Relaxation First-row seats encourage relaxation because they may be easily adjusted in terms of angle.

Furthermore, all of its seats are designed especially for all-electric cars and are about 30% smaller than those in other traditional models, giving passengers more room. To increase customer convenience, there are four type-C and one type-A USB port available.

The EV Performance Tune-up system, which gives the driver complete control over accelerator pedal sensitivity, driveline mode, steering effort, and motor power, significantly improves the IONIQ 6’s customised driving experience. With a few button clicks, drivers can customise a multitude of configurations to suit their own requirements.

e-ASD, a function of the IONIQ 6, adds excitement and a more sociable aspect to electric vehicles. The best possible spaceship-like sound is added to the cabin, and the sound texture is altered according to the driving condition of the car.
