Governor Orders Relocation of Chinese Firm Amid Environmental Concerns

In response to mounting concerns over the emission of toxic fumes and the resultant environmental pollution plaguing residents of Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has taken decisive action by ordering a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Golden Tripod Limited (GTL), a Chinese firm engaged in manufacturing vehicle parts, including brake shoes, situated along Ikot Ekpene road.

The governor’s directive also includes the immediate relocation of the factory to the Ibom Industrial Park in Itam, Itu local government area.

Governor Eno made this crucial announcement while inaugurating the construction of the 2.2-kilometer Tabernacle Road project, which extends from Ikot Ekpene road, traversing through Itu and Uyo Local Government Areas.

The directive to investigate and relocate GTL was prompted by alarming reports of environmental degradation stemming from the factory’s operations.

In response, Governor Eno instructed the Commissioners for Environment and Internal Security to compile a report on the factory’s activities within a 48-hour timeframe.

Expressing his deep concern, Governor Eno stated, “I understand that there are serious emissions around here. Please first of all find out what they do and immediately relocate them to the industrial park. It is not proper to cite factories in the middle of a city.”

Governor Eno also seized the opportunity to encourage investors seeking to establish industries within the state to consider utilizing the Ibom Industrial Park.

He affirmed that with the government’s innovative initiatives, the park would offer an ideal environment for industrial growth.

“The park has been partitioned into 150 plots, ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 square meters. What we are saying is that those who are ready to establish industries should come and present their industry plans. They will need to provide details regarding the timeline, expected employment opportunities, and other relevant information. Once we have this, we will allocate suitable land to them,” Governor Eno explained.

To ensure the industrial park’s success, the governor outlined plans to provide essential infrastructure.

He stated, “We are going to fence it round. We will establish a police station within the park, set up a power station, and ensure a stable water supply. Our aim is to make it comparable to industrial parks worldwide. This way, we can allocate land to projects that align with our vision.”

Governor Eno also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to support entrepreneurship within the state, with a focus on curbing capital flight.

He revealed plans to engage Akwa Ibom youths in the production of clothing items to support the education innovations undertaken by his administration. These initiatives will be carried out through various skills acquisition programs and state government support.

“We want to empower and motivate our young people by ensuring they have meaningful employment opportunities. After completing training at the Ibom Leadership Entrepreneurial Centre, we will provide them with shops in the industrial park and equip them with the necessary tools to apply their newfound skills,” Governor Eno emphasized.

Governor Umo Eno’s proactive steps reflect a commitment to safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable industrial development in Akwa Ibom State, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
