The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs Annett Gunther, has stated that the German government is collaborating with Nigeria to address climate change and related challenges in the country.
Mrs. Gunther, who disclosed this in an interview on Monday in Abuja, said the challenges include recurring floods in some parts of Nigeria.
While emphasising the need for decarbonization and zero emissions to address the underlying causes of climate change, the Ambassador commended Nigeria’s ambitious energy transition plan to attain zero emissions by 2060.
Mrs. Gunther stressed that the German embassy was committed to encouraging conversations to enable Nigeria achieve its lofty climate goals, especially in energy transition.
She reiterated that the German-Nigerian hydrogen diplomacy office seeks to help Nigeria achieve its climate goals by arranging meetings, conferences, and discussions on renewable energies, more specifically hydrogen.
She emphasized the unpredictability of weather patterns and the difficulties that climate change presents for agriculture, citing that durable farming land and revenue streams are diminished by climate change.
Mrs. Gunther also discussed plans to handle resource scarcity as the German government arbitrates disputes between communities and development cooperation programs that encourage crops resistant to drought.
