Food Waste Heightens Global Warming Concerns – Expert

Mr. Michael David, the Climate and Environmental Advocate Team Lead for the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), In an interview with the press on Monday 25 of December, emphasized the detrimental impact of food waste, particularly during festive seasons, on global warming.

According to David, the excessive disposal of food during Yuletide festivities not only constitutes a substantial loss of resources but also significantly contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases, including methane and carbon dioxide, leading to intensified global warming and climate change.

Drawing attention to the energy and natural resources utilized in the production, transportation, and preparation of food, David underscored the pressing need for heightened awareness and responsible consumption practices.

He highlighted that the disposal of food in landfills yields copious amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and involves a wasteful consumption of fresh water and groundwater resources, with agriculture accounting for 70% of global water usage.

Furthermore, David expressed concerns about the excessive packaging of food products, stating that non-biodegradable packaging material contributes to environmental pollution when discarded improperly.

In addressing the issue of food waste, David urged individuals to reconsider their consumption habits and to engage in charitable actions by sharing excess food with those in need.

He stressed the importance of minimizing food waste, emphasizing that surplus food not only results in material loss but also has broader societal implications, particularly in nations where food insecurity remains a pressing concern.

David’s insights shed light on the critical need for sustainable consumption practices, particularly during festive periods, to mitigate the adverse environmental effects of food waste and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
