FOMWAN tasks govts to sensitise citizens on dangers of Open Defecation

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Ondo State Chapter, has tasked state governments to intensify efforts at sensitising people on the dangers of open defecation.

Alhaja Aminat Abibullahi-Akinpelumi, FOMWAN President in Ondo state, gave the charge at the grand finale of FOMWAN Week celebration on Monday in Akure, and called for severe sanctions for defaulters.

NAN reports that the theme for the 2021 celebration is: “My Community, My Pride, Promoting General Well-being And Stopping Open Defecation.” FOWMAN Week is an annual celebration by Muslim women across the country which usually holds from June 1 to June 7.

Abibullahi-Akinpelumi said, “We appreciate the government of Ondo State for providing toilets in market places. We advice that the government should still intensify efforts to sensitise people on the dangers of open defecation and recommend a penalty for those involved in open defecation.

“This will reduce the cases of open defecation that is still rampant in some towns and communities.

“FOMWAN in the state is ready to work with other NGOs or the government to put an end to open defecation to enhance the well-being of our people in the state and country at large.

“Open defecation is contaminating the surroundings, spreading disease in the community and promoting sickness among the people,” she said.
