Flooding: Jigawa govt mobilises support as death toll exceeds 33

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, has disclosed that the level of destruction of the flood incident in the state is unprecedented.

The former governor disclosed this after he visited affected areas on Saturday for on-the- sot assessment of the incident that has claimed 33 lives and affected nearly 50,000 people.

Update report on the flooding disaster had it that it has impacted 148 communities across 14 local government areas and displaced over 11,500 households.

Speaking after his visit to the affected areas, Badaru said the government has been doing very well in tackling the regular flooding by dredging the channels.

He said this particular incident is unlike any previously recorded flood incident in the state owing to a non- stop seven-day rainfall.

The former governor said, “Government has been doing very well tackling the regular flooding by dredging the channels,” adding that this particular incident was exacerbated by excessive rainfall.

He assured residents that both the state and federal governments are committed to addressing the crisis and preventing future occurrences.

Badaru, who now serves as a Federal Minister, emphasized that the Federal Government is actively supporting Jigawa State in managing the aftermath of the floods.

” The president is aware of the situation and will support the government of Jigawa State in tackling the reoccurrence of the problem,” he stated.

“As part of the Federal Government’s renewed hope agenda, plans are underway to construct new dams in the state, which will help mitigate the impact of future floods,” Badaru disclosed.

Reacting to Badaru’s visit over the flood disaster, Governor Umar Namadi praised him for continued efforts at the federal level to secure support for Jigawa.

“Mr. Badaru has made sustained efforts at the federal level to assist in tackling the disaster and assist its victims,” Governor Namadi said.

He said the collaboration between state and federal authorities has been critical in mobilizing resources and delivering aid to those affected.

The governor noted that this concerted response highlights the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing natural disasters and supporting affected communities in rebuilding their lives.
