In a proactive move to ensure the cleanliness and sustainability of Kogi State, the Commissioner of Environment and Ecological Management has initiated a comprehensive clean-up operation targeting the drainages in the state capital.
Commencing on Saturday, the operation aims to clear obstructed drainages to facilitate the smooth flow of water, a critical measure in mitigating the risk of flooding during the upcoming rainy season.
The Commissioner highlighted the urgency of the evacuation, pointing out the significant accumulation of trash, sand, plastics, and other debris within major drainages across the state.
“As you may know, most drainages in major parts of the State have been taken over by trash, sand, plastics, and other debris,” he stated.
“As part of the proactive measures of the state government to ensure a clean environment, we want to clear them in preparation for the rainy season to ensure that rain flows seamlessly into major drains, River Niger, and Benue.”
Engr. Oluwasegun emphasized the proactive stance of the state government in preserving lives and promoting environmental sanitation under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.
He urged residents to collaborate with the government’s initiative by responsibly disposing of their waste in designated areas to prevent future environmental hazards.
The ministry has committed to maintaining the cleanliness of major drains continuously, reaffirming its dedication to safeguarding the environment and enhancing public health.
Alhaji Jibrin Sheidu, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, praised the state government’s proactive measures and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the clean-up effort.
