Flood: Association seeks intervention for farmers in Kaduna

Fadama Farmers Association, Kaduna State Chapter, has appealed to the state government and the Federal Government to assist its members, whose farmlands were submerged  by flood.

The Chairman, Mr Ahmad Abakwa,  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kaduna that many farmers in the state had been devastated by  loss of their farms to flooding following recent torrential rains.

Abakwa said that farmers, whose farmlands were close to river banks, suffered more from the flooding.

He  appealed to the governments to assist the farmers  in whatever ways possible.

He called on the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation to promptly assist affected farmers, who registered with the organisation.

On loan repayment, he said that it was  discouraging that a substantial number of farmers who took loans were affected by flood and unable to pay back the loan.

“Most farmers have invested heavily without realising profit, and they are finding  it difficult to reinvest due to financial constraints,” he said.

He noted that other farmers would only benefit from the credit facility when current beneficiaries would repay.

The chairman said that agriculture loan defaulters had been given up to the end of 2022 to pay back their loans.

He urged Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture to send extension workers for possible assessment of farms ravaged by flooding for assistance.
