The Federal Government, in partnership with the World Bank, has commissioned a 2.5-megawatt hybrid solar power plant at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Jaji, Kaduna State.

The project, announced on Saturday by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power, is part of the Energizing Education Programme Phase II. It includes a 600-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system fully funded by the Ministry of Power.

The new plant is expected to reduce NDA’s reliance on the national grid by 50 percent, improving electricity supply for academic, military, and residential activities on campus.

Major General A.K. Ibrahim, NDA Commandant, hailed the project as a boost to the academy’s legacy of military excellence, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and the government’s efforts on energy security.

Ibrahim called the initiative “a game-changer” and praised the Minister for his support, describing the project as a symbol of collaborative nation-building.

Implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the project also features nine kilometres of solar-powered streetlights, a renewable energy training centre, and upgraded electrical infrastructure to enhance efficiency and security.

Over 12,000 NDA community members are set to benefit from more reliable and sustainable power for training and academic work.

Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu described the project as aligning with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing its role in strengthening national assets and promoting education and sustainability.

The REA also trained 20 female cadets in solar energy technology to help bridge gender gaps in the renewable energy sector.

Adelabu underscored the importance of innovation and purposeful research during the 22nd National Council on Innovation, Science, and Technology, held shortly before the commissioning.
